Procedure
A rhinoplasty remoulds the cartilage and bone making up the nasal skeleton. These structures are shaped perfectly and allow the nose’s exterior tissue to adapt to the new nasal shape. Using a general anaesthetic to sedate the patient for 1-2 hours, Dr Kleintjes can correct the tip of the nose, including the nostril width and shape and height of the dorsal bone (nasal bridge).
Depending on your personal evaluation, different types of reconstructive nose procedures are available such as:
- A Tip Plasty is surgery to alter the shape of the nasal tip, making it smaller to suit the rest of the face.
- A closed and open rhinoplasty differs according to where the incisions are made. For example, a closed rhinoplasty involves making incisions inside the nose, whereas the surgeon creates incisions outside the nose with an open rhinoplasty. A closed rhinoplasty is a better surgical option because it involves a quick recovery with minimal scarring and swelling present.
Recovery
Recovery is relatively quick, and signs of the procedure should dissipate soon. The first few days after the rhinoplasty, swelling slowly disappears. Once the large bandage has been removed, the results of the procedure will be noticed immediately.
Regular post-operative follow-ups ensure the surgical area is healing well. A bandage is applied to the nose for seven days at most. It is also expected that you will take off from work for the first week. Internal swelling, bruising and swelling around the cheeks, and nasal congestion are expected in the first week.
From the second to the fifth week, Dr Kleintjes will remove the bandages, but swelling will still be present over the nose. By this time, you can return to work and fortunately, no one else will notice that you have undergone surgery. From the fifth week of recovery, swelling is still present, as well as numbness, pressure on the nose and pain when smiling.
From the sixth week onwards, symptoms of discomfort should disappear, and you should feel confident about the changes done to your nose.
