SURGICAL PROCEDURES

Lipofilling

Overview

Lipofilling (Lipotransfer) is a touch-up procedure used to fill the breast, buttock, and face areas with organic fat taken from your own body. Fat grafting is typically used in breast revision surgery to re-sculpt and plump the breasts. Instead of surgically removing and transferring fat, the surgeon retrieves fat through liposuction.

Liposuction is a technique that suctions and purifies extra fat to inject into hollow regions. Fat deposits are removed from areas that accumulate the most mass, such as the neck, arms, stomach, thighs and buttock. Fat is taken to reshape the body appropriately. However, diet and exercise cannot reduce the amount of fat accumulated. This is where Lipofilling comes in, correcting issues related to fat build-up. Fat is instead transferred to areas that require it the most.

Lipofilling, also known as Lipomodelling, is highly effective in correcting a contour deficit by plumping up flat areas requiring more volume. However, the amount of tissue can be lost due to a traumatic injury (bites, car accident or laceration) or a life-threatening disease such as cancer.

Procedure

The surgery takes place under anaesthesia, so no pain or sensation is felt during liposuction. However, the period of recovery could also be uncomfortable for some time. Firstly, fat is taken (sucked out) from deep fatty layers in the abdomen, buttock, hips or thighs using a needle and syringe. Then, using a centrifuge, a medical device powered by an electric motor, body fluid circulates the rotator and fat cells are filtered. As a result, cleansed fat cells are injected into flat areas. Sometimes this needs to be done a few times to achieve the desired results.

Recovery

After liposuction, typical side effects include swelling, pain, bruising and numbness in the area. However, it is critical to remember that these side effects will subside given time. Before the procedure, it is common to discuss concerns about pain, the anaesthesia that will be used and the type of medications to take. At the time, wearing a compression garment will help stabilise the area and prevent swelling until you heal entirely.

FAQ

1How should I prepare for Lipofilling surgery?
Our medical team takes photos from various angles of the areas that require work. Before this, we conduct a pre-operative assessment which includes details of possible pathologies and a complete evaluation of your lifestyle. In addition, the plastic surgeon provides clear instructions on what to eat and what diet to follow before and after surgery. For example, if you are a smoker, you have to stop smoking at least four weeks before the operation and eight weeks after the procedure.
2What can I expect after Lipofilling surgery?
A compression garment must be used for at least three weeks to prevent bruising and swelling. It is normal to experience pain in the area, but painkillers are prescribed to treat this. Anti-inflammatories and acetylsalicylic acid must be avoided to reduce the risk of infection.
3What is Lipofilling of the breasts?
Fat cells are injected into the flat areas of the breasts to restore their volume and symmetry. Lipofilling is an essential surgical technique to reconstruct the breasts after cancer surgery or during revision breast surgery when removing breast implants.
